Selina Shida Hack, a freelance multidisciplinary dance artist, and choreographer from Queens, New York, now based in Berlin, Germany, seeks to create works that blend authentic movement with various mediums to craft intricate and honest visuals. With roots in Guyana and Japan, her wide-angle view of the world inspires her to explore diverse visual techniques influenced by different cultures.
Selina began dancing at The Alvin Ailey School, later earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance with a minor in Arts Management from the State University of New York at Purchase College. She also trained at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as an international exchange student.
Post-graduation, Selina has collaborated with notable companies such as Hivewild, Keigwin + Co., Peter Stathas Dance, and Gaspard & Dancers. She has performed pieces by renowned choreographers, including Martha Graham, Sidra Bell, Celia Rowlson-Hall, and more. Selina has enriched her dance language through intensives worldwide, including the B12 Dance Festival (Germany), Deltebre Dansa Festival (Spain), and Sidra Bell Dance New York (New York), among others.
Selina has showcased her choreographic talent internationally, choreographing for conductor Antonio Ciacca's Pulses at the La Spezia Jazz Music Festival and presenting discovered determination at the Kaatsbaan Summer Dance Festival. She also choreographed and performed the site-specific solo In Manus Tuas at The Historic Green-Wood Cemetery for the To America series. In the realm of movement direction, Selina directed and starred in the music video Shelter Island (2021) and also took on the role for Wait A Minute (2021), a music video directed by Marta Renzi.
In Berlin, Selina choreographed the feeling of my hand being held in yours, exploring post-COVID-19 human connections. She's currently working on origins -the skin between us- (2023), a project questioning her biracial identity and the idea of home, supported by Fonds DAKU e.V. and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media.
Through her commercial work, Selina was selected to be featured in the music videos, such as Stereotypes (2015) by Black Violin, Everybody’s Lonely (2018) by Jukebox the Ghost, and Black Vultures (2018) by Halestorm. She has been featured in commercials such as, CXN Fashion and Facebook Messenger Rooms. In May 2019, Selina performed for Madonna during her guest appearance to International Song Competition, Eurovision in Tel Aviv, Israel choreographed by Megan Lawson.
As a photographer, Selina’s work has been displayed at the International Center of Photography NYC for the exhibit #ICPConcerned covering the pandemic.
